There are so many reasons to get the kids involved in cooking – it can provide endless hours of entertainment and is a fantastic way to teach them to be independent and make healthy choices in the kitchen.

So whats on the menu?

Pizza faces

DIY pizzas make for great lunch or dinner ideas, plus there’s a little fun involved when it comes to adding the ingredients. Start with a pre-made pizza base or Lebanese bread. Ask the kids to spread a tomato paste or passata-style tomato sauce over the top, then make a funny face with ham slices, cherry tomato halves, sliced red capsicum and zucchini. Now it’s time to sprinkle grated mozzarella cheese on top, then add a little extra above the eyes to give your funny face hair. Bake in a preheated 180°C oven for about 10 minutes. Then decide whose face is the funniest before gobbling them all up!

Anytime pancakes

In a bowl, combine 1 cup self-raising flour with 1 tbsp sugar. Beat in 1 egg, then mix in ¾ cup milk, a little at a time, until the mixture is free of lumps. Add a little melted butter to a hot pan (with adult supervision), then drop in ¼-cup measures of mixture. When bubbles appear on pancake surface, flip over gently and cook the other side until nicely golden. Serve with strawberries and ricotta, honey and banana or lemon and sugar.

Frozen fruit pops

Want more? Thread bite-sized pieces of berries, banana, pineapple, grapes, watermelon or any fruit on hand onto a skewer and freeze for a few hours. Remove and serve with a bowl of plain yogurt and honey.

Bubbly banana smoothies

Breakfast, dessert or anywhere in between, a fruit smoothie always goes down a treat. Get the kids to rip up two ripe bananas into a bowl and add about 2 cups of milk, a tbsp of honey and a big dollop of plain yoghurt. It’s now the grownups turn to pour the mixture into a blender and whizz until smooth (making sure little fingers are at a safe distance). The kids will love watching their creation come together.

Cooking with kids is easy and fun, and there’s little doubt they’ll want to eat their own creations. Use these ideas for inspiration then plan some kid-friendly meal ideas of your own.
